Sophie has been looking forward to April 1st bc she's been excited about the notion that someone might play a trick on her. I declined to mention that most people plan the jokes they'll be playing - rather than hoping for ones that will be played on them - for fear that she'd like this idea and target me. So this morning I decided to give her what she wished for.
Since Sophie is not generally a fan of the school's hot lunches, I usually pack her one in a brown paper bag, never forgetting to enclose a napkin with a little note written on it (a tradition my mother started when I was in school). This time, however, I replaced her favorite lunch items with plastic ones, and her napkin-note read a little differently than it does every other day:
Don't go calling child protective services on me just yet... at precisely 12:00, I walked into the school with a bag of piping hot Arby's roast beef and Curly Fries, as well as an ice-cold chocolate shake for the poor lunchless sweetheart. By the time I found her in the lunch room, she had already been offered several lunch items from her good-Samaritan tablemates, which the lunchroom monitor told her to decline bc "surely your mother packed you something else!" I arrived at her side just then, and said "April Fools!!!" which resulted in Sophie turning the brightest shade of red I'd ever seen. She was beaming, however, and through her laughter said to me, "Thank you, Mom. I love you." I'm not sure, however, if she was thanking me for the lunch - or for playing a joke on her.
You're welcome, Sophie. I love you too.
Oh my gosh, that is just the cutest shot!!! I LOVE her April Fool's joke! I remember when I used to put snakes in your lunch. LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL! ILY

Oh that's so sweet!! I'm such a meanie - I told my son he could stay home today and then when he said ok and looked like he was going to lay down again - I said "April Fools!" He was not happy with me at all. Gosh, I'm such a terrible mom!! :)
